February 27, 2004 This
is me at a wedding. I drink at weddings.
You will
NEVER see me getting married at a wedding!
You could POSSIBLY see me at a Catholic wedding, a Jewish wedding, a
Baptist wedding, a non-religious wedding, an interracial wedding, an
underwater wedding, a mid air skydiving wedding, a world record setting
multiple wedding, a nude wedding, a 5th wedding for the bride and 7th
wedding for the groom wedding, a wedding between a cat and a dog...OK,
I did actually see the interspecies wedding on TV, but I doubt they
had a valid marriage license.
Some of you may not know this but I am an ordained minister (You
can be to if you click here). You may actually see me perform a wedding
ceremony one day! I could perform ANY of those marriages I listed above
and they would be legal and binding as long as the participants had
all their paperwork in order.
I'm also incredibly happy to say that at this particular moment in history
I could perform a same-sex wedding and it would be legal and binding
as well...at least in one city anyway. Unfortunately that might not
be true in the near future and all of those same-sex couples that have
been legally married might find themselves holding a piece of paper
that only serves to remind them of the basic freedom they only had for
a very brief time.
I normally try to stay out of politics. I find it very daunting to try
to decide between the lesser of evils when it comes time to vote. This
country is so mired in partisan politics in the first place that not
allot ever gets done anyway so I don't really feel too bad about it.
The reason I am writing this is that I find it unbelievable that our
leaders are proposing a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.
This is about the time where I'll start rambling and things will seem
to come from left field. It's just that I'm not a great writer and it
gets hard to string all of loose ends together.
This is nothing less than complete and total discrimination.
Different groups of people have and still are fighting for equal right
for many years. Some battles are won and some are lost but at least
we keep progressing forward in the end. If Bush and his supporters get
their way we won't be loosing a battle, we will be taking a GIANT step
backwards in this country. This is a common sense issue that is being
clouded by religion. That's the bottom line. What other excuse is there
that can be made to deny two people of whatever race, religion or sex
the opportunity to publicly and officially proclaim their love for one
another?
There is none! And religion has no place in politics.
